Third Culture kids often have different experiences and cultural references from their parents. It is out of these experiences that NAZORA was birthed.


Yorùbá...+
A number of Western African countries call Yoruba traditions and culture their heritage. These modelled outfits are usually worn in varying fashions to weddings/ parties/ special events or as casual wear.

Male outfits comprise of Filà (soft fez cap), Buba (shirt) Agbada (wide flowing robe), and Sokoto (trousers).
Female outfits comprise of Gele (head wrap), matching shawl, Buba, Iro (wrapper)

The Urhobos are a group of people who dwell near the northwestern oil rich Niger Delta area of West Africa. Urhobo, Isoko, Okpe and Uvwie are the main languages spoken in these areas. The women wear an attire that comprises of a head-tie, beaded lace blouse and a two-piece wrapper. The look is usually complemented with a necklace and matching hand bracelet made from coral beads.

People of Zulu heritage belong to one of the largest ethnic groups in South Africa. This is the modern traditional attire for the Zulu. The hat ‘Isicholo’ was originally worn by married women as a sign that she is taken.
The beads become significant with age and are passed on by the family. As a girl gets older she wears more beads and the layers worn by a married woman signify the number of years she has been married. Messages used to be woven into the beadwork and some will advertise girls that are ready for marriage.

Igbo sometimes spelt ‘Ibo’, are a group of people whose heritage are from South-eastern Nigeria. The men have simple and elegant attires.

This model is wearing an Ishiagu (pull-over top with decorative chain and buttons), trousers and a red 'okpu agu' or 'agwu' (fez hat). The patterns on the Ishiagu sometimes symbolises tributes to masculinity. Jewelries, walking stick and African horsetail fly-whisk are also worn as accessories

People of Bini heritage are neighbours to the Urhobos in West Africa, but they have a unique traditional attire.
The women’s outfit comprise of a beautiful wrapper made from a variety of materials including velvet, lace or george, Ewu-ivie (a beaded cape), Evie-uru (neck beads), and Evie obo (wrist beads). The outfit is then completed by adorning the women with an Eto-okuku (a unique hairstyle).
The hair style is decorated with red coral beads that are sewn into the hair to form a crown called ‘Okuku’.

Uganda...+
'Umushanana' is another traditional outfit from Uganda worn by Banyarwanda and Bafumbira women.
The outfit is worn for various occasions but brighter colours are preferred at weddings. Beads/ jewelleries of choice are worn to complement the dress.

‘Gomesi’ is a traditional outfit of the people of Uganda. It is worn by Banga and Basoga women from Eastern and Central Uganda.
The outfit is worn at various occasions, including as a daily wear.


Fulani...+
Fulani's are known by different names across the globe. They are sometimes called Fulbe, but in the Hausa language they are called Fulani. The Fulani ethnic group have the largest nomadic pastoral community in the world and are predominantly in the North, West and Central Africa.
Fulani people specialise in the pyro-engraving decoration of calabashes and wood bowls, with a combination of abstract figural motifs, and coloured pigments. Milk wood bowels are important household artefact, a symbol of their pastoral life and it encapsulates the Fulani identity.

Colours, clothing and design patterns on materials and accessories often have significant symbolism in Fulani culture. Geometric decorations bear the influence of Tuareg and Berber aesthetics. Women of Fulani heritage usually wear heavy twisted dibi (earrings), caaka (necklaces), and heavy anklet ornaments (they enabled wodaabe women to develop a cow like step which is appreciated in their culture). Single women wear a selection of head ornaments that are different from that of married women. This white outfit is worn casually. and those for special occasions have more decorations.


‘Khanga’ (kangas) is a dress made from bright, colourful, free flowing traditional patterned cotton cloths, worn by women of Tanzanian and East African heritage. It typically consists of three parts, pindo (wide border), mji (central motif), jina (a strip which contains a message/ riddle).
There is also another kind of garment called ‘kitenge’, similar to khanga, but it is made of thicker and richer textiles.
khangas and kitenges are important family gifts in Tanzanian culture and usually remain in a family’s possession from birth to death.

Ghana is a country blessed with lots of gold and has one of the oldest dynasties in the world! Their wealth in gold is reflected in their kings traditional outfit. It is said that the gold is so heavy that the king's men sometimes have to help hold up his arm.

Ghanians use different cloth fabrics for their traditional attire and each ethnic group have their own individual cloth, but the most popular is the ‘Kente’ cloth worn by the models. Kente is like a ceremonial and national costume worn during very important occasions. It comes in various colours, sizes and designs and it is known all over the world.
Kente also has cultural significance because of how the cloth is made. it is a visual representation of Ghanian history, a form of written language through weaving. The root word for kente means basket and the original name for the cloth is nsaduaso/ nwontoma.
