Institution… an organisation, establishment, institute. It exists and functions because of the actions of beings called ‘Human’, in other words people, individuals.
So can Overt Racism really exist without #Institutional Racism?
The act of racism in of itself are learnt and usually starts at home (not just a physical structure but where one feels comfortable to share their innermost thoughts). That thought evolves and eventually gets tested in the fabric of our society or community called Primary school, and subsequently gets embolden in what we call secondary or middle school.
Racism starts early but no child or human is born a racist.
If institutions are truly free from institutional racism, then where is the evidence across society? In sports, leadership positions in financial institutions, academia, technology, literature, politics and government. Where is the equity in international trade deals and travel agreements?
In considering the matter, who is best placed to pass judgment and conclude that the issue no longer exists, the founding institution of the act, the perpetuator or the victim?
We need not look far to see or experience what diversity looks like, because natures ecosystem demonstrates diversity more than we advance beings can ever comprehend - each intelligent design is unique and has a value. It takes more effort to exclude than to include.
William Wilberforce said, ‘We have different forms assigned to us in the school of life, different gifts imparted. All is not attractive that is good. Iron is useful, though it does not sparkle like the diamond. Gold has not the fragrance of a flower. So different persons have various modes of excellence, and we must have an eye to all.”
Not until all people are seen as #humanbeings first and foremost, born equal, and do not feel the need to belong or attach themselves to some institution in order to get justice, then those who say institutional racism does not exist are down playing and skirting around the main issue that is ravaging our communities on all levels…Racism.
