Public service...

Public of or concerning the people as a whole, open to or shared by all the people.

Service…the action of helping or doing work for someone else.

‘Public Service’ seems to be about “you”, an individual making a decision on how you wish to serve others. Therefore, for another individual to suggest that it can only be for a privileged few with titles, military awards and decoration, family lineage, society status or class, or some stratospheric philanthropic billionaire seems absurd.

Like the saying goes, it is in the name “Public Service”. There is nothing in the name that requires one to ‘be’ or ‘belong’ to a class or certain group of people to undertake public service. Ironically for you to serve effectively for a cause you truly believe in, you need to have total control of not just your life, but your time because sometimes the highest service requires laying down your life.

‘Time’ the one thing that nothing can buy or replace. It is yours, a gift to use as you please. To suggest taking back that control is to serve half-heartedly or dishonouring in some way is beyond bewildering. The action of helping or doing work for someone else goes beyond our #heritage and identity. It extends beyond who we are or claim to be. Nothing is created to serve self.

As ‘humans’ we are designed to live in a community - long proven and even more so during this covid19 pandemic. Living in community is serving one another regardless of our physical condition, location, skin tone, class or societal status; supporting one another as suppose to being subservient, because we are all equal - naked we came and naked shall we return, dust to dust.

Public Service should not require some superficial fanfare, loyalty to some demagogue or using the position and power of a public service office to seek self serving interest, but instead it should be that ‘we can all live a life of service…service is universal and it is far from being a matter of titles and roles, "is universal” according to H&M spoke person.

We ought to remember, that the one that is being served remembers the deed not the title, the awards nor the status of the individual serving. Likewise stripping ones title or awards does not diminish their deeds - good or bad.

Is your #heritage preventing you from serving? If it is then ask yourself #whoareyou?
